Hola amigos! sorry for the long disappearance. this is a character i started sketching up, inspired by Nezha from chinese mythology. He is a kid deity and son of general Li Jing. He actually has a really interesting story but i think he is most popularized in Journey to the west where he fought the monkey king when it caused havoc in heaven. i plan on doing a bunch of journey to the west inspired characters after thesis is over, it'd be cool.

hey guys. sorry about he lack of posting. sketchbook pro fail

i tried to be spontaneous and use a different painting program. since i can get sketchbook for free on autodesk, i decided to give it a shot. guess what, it sucks! or i suck. i dont really like the brushes, makes it difficult to add small details....
anywaay, i did this random sketch to test it out. tried drawing hair and just failed so bad lol. the brushes are just so clunky and hard to control. so i'll just stop herre. maybe i'll take it into photoshop and finish it up or something. i never finish anything though.

first random sketch of 2011

so yea, my first sketch to start off the new year. i am totally procrastinating btw... o.o

so this time i went ahead and did something different when i colored it. instead of my usual painting approach when i start off with color, i started off painting it grayscale (cause grayscales are faster for me) and after i set the layer mode to color and started painting solid color on it. it saves the time from blending. i've seen alot of other artist use this technique. i tried it once along time ago, but back then i was stubborn and didnt want to change my technique lol. so yea, this is the result, and idk i might use this technique more often, it proves to be faster.

during my years studying at SVA, i've learned that in order to improve, you must be willing to change and learn from others. i use to be stubborn and did things the way i want. hah, like my freshman year of drawing class. my professor would constantly tell me to experiment and blah blah. if you've followed my art from the beginning, you would now that i began as a pencil artist. i was really into traditional painting before i got into digital. eventually i got tired of the traditional painting scene so i gave up on that. but i understood color theory very well but i've always been a pencil and charcoal kinda kid. and i always drew portraits, hah, and i still do. it's something about facial features and its structure that interests me. but anyway, this professor would constantly tell me to try different things, get out of my comfort zone and do something different, like modern art nonsense. bleh. i still hated her assignments, if given the chance, i would never do them again lol. but i did learn something very valuable. it took me awhile to realize it, but i learned that im only going to improve if i experiment. i cant be in my comfort zone forever. i cant keep doing the same old things and using the same methods. it gets boring and you start to lose interest. trust me, i've had huge art blocks. art is not about perfection. it took my awhile to realize that too. hah. art is self expression. its not meant to be perfect or anything. once i realized that i started to feel more like an artist.

Some concept work for my thesis "Bitter Tea". It will be a 3d animated short that i will dedicate the next 18 months of my life to.

Hook: A benevolent emperor finds treachery in a cup of bitter tea. (lol cheesy much)

Time: approx. 0:45 - 1:05 min

Output due date: May 2012

I will be focusing on the style of the era, character design, and cloth simulation. Here is the initial design. Not too excited but i think i'll grow into it. hopefully... o__o

workin hard, with major distractions. lots of things to do, i've been workin on polishing my animatic. which for me is, redraw EVERYTHING lol. i feel like i lack the motivation to do this. it's thesis, and im just not excited when i should be. i've just been feeling like this all semester with every class. everything i do just seems so mechanical. i end up doing it because i HAVE to kinda thing. i guess art school just wore me out. i just lack motivation. and finals are right around the corner, which is not helping, i just kinda feel really down about school and life lately, idk why, but yeah. okay, sorry about the emo-ness. i just wanted to update some wip this week lol bye.

i need to put more content to my blog, so i wont seem so useless.

woah, two paintings in two weeks, whaaat. im on a roll =D anyways, about this. i normally use a hard brush when i paint. but this time im practicing with a soft brush. i've been breakin out of my comfort zone alot lately. =D the soft brush for me, gives a more airbrush effect, which i don't know if i like. it's easier to blend with light tones, but i find with darker tones its more difficult. i dont know how long i've been working on this because i've been going back and forth between things lol. so im not gonna keep track of how long this takes me like i usually do. im trying to work on a theme for my website. this is a possiblity, idk depends on how it turns out. oh and don't let the pretty colors fool you, this MIGHT turn out gorey 8D im always doing random things when i SHOULD be doing homework =.= cause im a rebel x]

btw i know my workspace looks crazy lol since my screen is really big, i like my tools to be close. plus i expanded the window so i could this screen hihi

I have a serious case of insomnia... you know, it's not even the fact that i stay up all night working on last minute homework anymore. It's just become routine now a days ...yea.. to be up at 6 in the morning. Now whenever some one tells me they're going to bed at 12 i would think that it's still rather early. Just stay up a little longer and talk to me. haha... I can't help that im always procrastinating and putting off work until the very last minute. I know, it's terrible, but it's a tough habit to break from. Trust me. I've just finished Erics 2d homework... and i could be sleeping for a few hours before the 9 AM class. But i don't want to. I'm not tired. I should be, but I'm just not normal...

Anyway, back to the reason why i decided to update my blog. My current illustration. I'm still working on it of course. Actually, the truth is, I've been working on it for weeks now. I just been putting it off again and again. I will try to finish it. This is just another practice, just alittle more polished that the regular speedpaint.

This time im trying something a little different than what i normally do. That is to create a more illustrative feel in this piece rather than what im use to; realism. I mean, it's realistic in a sense, but also have fantasy and creative air.

AMY IS A NOOB

here's to my first entry. after many years of using various blogging sites in the past i find myself to always abondon them after a couple of months. and leave them all to be lost in the vast world of cyber space. now how i wish i can find those naive entries from my teenage years.. i probably wrote about how lost and lonely i am in a world where no one understands my dark and angtsy soul. well, isn't that what most teens write about haha. ..if i could take a step back into my past, i would. i wonder what i thought about in those moments. i would probably laugh, because they were probably really stupid. but i like the feeling of nostalgia. it's makes me feel all dreamy, you know. damn how i wish i knew where all those journals went...

well, here it is. i dont know what to write. that's my main problem. i never know what to write ...for anything ... for the life of me. my friend Amy (stalker xP) told me i should make a post, so here i am ...making a post. haha the thing i love about blogging is you can ramble on and on and no one will complain otherwise it'll defeat the whole purpose.

anyways, i hope to finally keep this blog as a record of my artistic progress rather than scribbles of my daily life. cause frankly my life is not interesting enough for me to write about and for others to read. so, i will try to be active and update my artwork and progress every so often.

so here goes nothing...
